Two scooters, same price. One has springs at both ends and 8-inch solid tires. The other has no suspension and 10-inch air-filled tires. Most shoppers assume the first one rides better because it has the feature listed on the box.

It usually doesn't.

Suspension is the spec that gets shopped for and tires are the spec that determines how the scooter actually feels under you. Get that hierarchy backwards and you'll pay extra for a harsher ride.

Your tires do most of the work

A pneumatic tire is a suspension system. That's not a metaphor — it's an air spring with built-in damping from the flex of the casing, and it's working continuously at every frequency, including the fast, small, high-frequency chatter that a spring-and-linkage setup is too heavy and too slow to respond to.

Air volume is what determines how much of that chatter disappears. A larger-diameter tire with a fatter casing holds more air, deflects more over a given bump, and rolls over an edge instead of slamming into it. This is why wheel diameter shows up in ride-quality complaints so consistently: small wheels drop harder into potholes and expansion joints, and there's a limit to how much any suspension can undo that.

Pressure matters just as much, and it's free. Riding at the top of the printed range gives you the lowest rolling resistance and the harshest ride; a little lower gives you noticeably more compliance at some efficiency cost and a higher pinch-flat risk. Most people never touch it, which means most people are riding on a setup nobody chose.

The practical read: a non-suspended scooter on big pneumatic tires beats a suspended scooter on small solid tires over broken pavement, most of the time. If you're choosing between the two, choose the tires.

Bad suspension is worse than none

Cheap suspension isn't a diluted version of good suspension. It behaves differently, and some of those behaviours are actively unpleasant.

An undamped coil spring stores energy and gives it straight back, so you get pogo — the scooter oscillates after a bump instead of settling. Ride a rhythmic surface like a boardwalk or a sequence of concrete slabs and it builds instead of fading. Then there's brake dive: a soft, undamped front end compresses under hard braking, which shortens the wheelbase, steepens the steering angle, and makes the front feel nervous exactly when you want it planted. Add a bushing or pivot that develops play after a season and now suspension is your wobble source rather than your comfort source.

None of that means suspension is bad. It means suspension quality is not optional in the way the feature checkbox implies. A scooter with no suspension has no suspension problems.

What suspension actually buys you

Where good suspension earns its weight, it does three things tires can't.

It keeps the tire on the ground. A wheel bouncing off a rough surface isn't braking or steering while it's airborne, and above about 15 mph, on genuinely bad pavement, that's a control issue rather than a comfort issue. This is the argument that actually justifies the cost.

It absorbs the big single hits — the sunken utility cover, the unmarked driveway lip — that a tire alone bottoms out on. Those impacts are what bend rims, kill bearings, and crack stem welds over time, so suspension is partly a protection budget for the rest of the scooter.

And it reduces fatigue on longer rides. On a fifteen-minute hop that hardly registers. On a forty-minute ride, chatter you'd barely notice at first accumulates in your hands, forearms, and lower back.

If you're picking one end, pick the front. Your hands and the steering feel are more sensitive to impacts than your legs are, and your knees are already a decent rear suspension if you ride with them slightly bent.

So do you need it?

Some straightforward rules.

  • Skip it if your route is smooth pavement or bike path, your rides are short, and you carry the scooter up stairs. Suspension adds weight and folded bulk you'll feel every single day for comfort you'll notice occasionally.
  • Get it if your route includes broken concrete, cobbles, tram tracks, or gravel, or if you ride above roughly 20 mph on public streets. At that point it's a control feature.
  • Get it if you're a heavier rider or you commute more than about half an hour each way. Both raise the impact energy going into your body and the frame.
  • Spend the money on tires instead if the choice is between a suspended scooter with small solid tires and a rigid one with big air tires.
  • Avoid it where the design is a bare undamped spring on a scooter you'll ride hard. You're buying pogo and brake dive, not comfort.

One thing to do on the test ride

Find the worst pavement within a block of the shop and ride it twice — once at walking pace, once at your real commuting speed.

Then brake hard from that speed and pay attention to what the front end does. If it dips deeply and takes a moment to come back, you've found the compromise that comes with that particular suspension, and you get to decide whether the comfort is worth it. That single manoeuvre tells you more than every spec on the box.
