You need fewer charging sessions than you think

A friend spent four months talking himself out of an EV because he parks on a permit-only residential street with no chance of a home charger. He'd framed the whole problem as "I have to replicate a driveway." Then he looked at his actual driving: about 90 miles in a normal week — two short commutes he mostly bikes anyway, a grocery run, and a Sunday visit to his mother's.

Ninety miles a week. He'd been agonizing over how to charge nightly when he needed roughly one session every eight or nine days.

That's the reframe this page hangs on. The gasoline habit trains you to think in fuel events — go somewhere, fill up, leave. Home charging replaces that with topping off constantly and never thinking about it. If you can't do the second, you're not stuck; you're back to something like the first, which you already know how to do, except the stop is longer and less frequent.

The people who struggle aren't the ones lacking a garage. They're the ones driving long distances daily with no outlet at either end — and for them a plug-in hybrid is often the better answer, no shame in it.

Work out your actual weekly number

Do this before you read another word of advice, because the answer changes which options below are even relevant.

Take your weekly mileage and divide by your car's real efficiency in miles per kWh — most EVs land in the low-to-mid single digits, and your trip computer tells the truth better than any published figure. That gives kWh per week. Divide by the power of whatever you can plug into and you have hours of charging per week.

Those power figures are typical rather than universal — your onboard charger and the circuit both set the real number, and charging losses mean the wall draws more than the pack receives. Treat the hours column as approximate. The point is that a 75-mile-a-week driver and a 400-mile-a-week driver need completely different solutions, and generic advice serves neither.

Workplace charging is the quiet winner

If your employer has any parking at all, this is the option to chase first, and it's underused because people assume it's someone else's decision to make.

The fit is close to perfect. You're parked eight or nine hours, which is plenty even at modest power, the car sits in one predictable place, and you're not competing with the residential grid at peak evening demand. It turns the whole problem into a non-issue for a lot of drivers who never think to ask.

How to ask, in rough order of what works:

  1. Find out whether anyone else in the building drives an EV or wants to. A request from four people is a facilities project; from one person it's a favor.
  2. Ask facilities, not HR, and ask about existing electrical capacity rather than chargers. "Is there a 240-volt circuit near the lot?" gets a more useful answer than "can we get chargers."
  3. Bring up the cheap version explicitly. A couple of weatherproof outlets on an existing circuit costs a fraction of networked charging hardware and solves the problem for early adopters. Companies that balk at a full charging plaza will often say yes to two outlets.
  4. Mention that utility and public incentive programs for commercial charging exist in many regions — but check what's currently available where you are rather than quoting numbers, since these change constantly.
  5. Offer to pay. Reimbursing the company, or accepting a simple flat monthly fee, removes the "we can't give employees free fuel" objection, which is a real one.

If your workplace already has chargers and they're always full, ask about a shared-etiquette norm rather than more hardware. Many sites solve congestion with a sign-up sheet and a rule that you move your car after a set time. Cheaper than a new install and it works.

How to ask a landlord or HOA without getting a no

Most tenants who ask about charging get refused because of how they ask. "Can I install a charger?" sounds to a property manager like electrical work, liability, cost, and a precedent they'll have to extend to everyone. Every one of those is a reason to say no.

Reframe it. You're not asking for infrastructure; you're asking for access to electricity — and you're answering their three real objections before they raise them.

Their objection: who pays for the power?

Answer it with a number. Take your weekly kWh from the table above, multiply by the rate on the building's bill if you can get it, and offer either a flat monthly amount comfortably above your consumption or to fund a submeter. A landlord who can see the cost is bounded stops treating it as open-ended liability.

Their objection: electrical safety and liability

Offer to pay a licensed electrician to assess the circuit and do any work to code, permits pulled, with proof of insurance and inspection sign-off. That converts "unknown risk" into "documented professional work." Never propose doing it yourself, and never propose an extension cord.

Their objection: precedent and fairness

Concede it, then turn it into a selling point. Suggest the install be sited so it can serve more spaces later, and point out that prospective tenants increasingly filter for charging access. A building with charging rents faster — a business argument, which is the language they're speaking.

Before you negotiate, find out whether your jurisdiction has a "right to charge" law. A number of states, provinces and countries have enacted statutes that limit a landlord's or homeowners' association's ability to refuse a reasonable, tenant-funded charging installation. The details, the conditions, and whether they cover renters at all vary a great deal — look up the current text for your own location rather than trusting a summary, including this one.

Put your request in writing, keep it short, and include a specific proposed solution with a cost you're willing to bear. Vague requests get vague refusals.

One ordinary outlet is often enough

The most underrated solution in this entire discussion is a plain household outlet within reach of a parking space.

Level 1's terrible reputation comes from people judging it as a full-recharge method. Judged that way it's laughable. Judged as a way to replace what you drove today, it's frequently plenty — look again at the 75 and 150 mile rows. A car plugged in nightly on a normal socket quietly stays ahead of a lot of real driving.

Where this gets practical: a shared garage with outlets for maintenance equipment, a carport with a light circuit, a ground-floor unit with an exterior outlet, a workplace loading dock. These already exist everywhere. The ask is small and the electrical work is often zero.

One honest caution. An old outlet on an old circuit drawing near its limit for twelve hours a night is a genuine fire risk — have the circuit checked, treat a warm cover plate or discolored receptacle as a stop-immediately signal, don't share the circuit, and use the manufacturer's cable on a dedicated outlet. No extension cords, ever.

Build charging into errands you already run

This is the shift that makes garage-free ownership pleasant rather than tedious. Stop looking for time to charge. Look for places you already spend time and check whether they have a plug.

The overlooked candidates: the grocery store you spend forty minutes in weekly, the gym, municipal and library lots that are often cheap and quietly well-equipped, cinemas, hotels if you travel for work, the commuter rail lot if you park and ride. An hour on a public AC charger while you're doing something else is nearly free time, and an hour of Level 2 is a genuinely useful amount of energy.

The failure mode is picking one spot and depending on it. Chargers break, get blocked by a gas car, or get taken by someone who left for the afternoon. Have three places on your list, not one.

Before you buy anything, open two or three charging network apps and look at the map around home, work and your errand loop. Filter for AC chargers, not just fast ones — people skip past the slow ones and those are exactly the ones that suit this pattern. Note which are behind a gate, which are in paid parking, and which have reviews complaining they don't work.

Living on fast charging

Some people just do this: one weekly stop at a DC fast charger, twenty to forty minutes, done. If the alternative is not owning an EV, it's a perfectly reasonable life.

Be clear-eyed about the costs. Public fast charging is typically priced well above residential electricity per kWh — often several times higher, though it varies by network, region and subscription — so much of the fuel saving that motivates EV ownership shrinks. Run your own numbers before assuming the economics work.

The other cost is battery wear, and here I'd push back on the internet's alarmism. A weekly fast charge will not destroy your pack. Daily fast charging on a hot battery in a hot climate is the pattern to worry about. Let price per kWh be the deciding factor, not that fear.

One practical tip: fast charging is quickest in the lower half of the battery and tapers sharply as it fills. 10% to 60% takes far less time than 60% to 100%, so two shorter stops in the fast part of the curve beat one long stop dragging up to full.

Curbside, lampposts, and the cable-across-the-sidewalk question

Curbside charging — chargers in the street, sometimes built into lampposts or utility poles — is excellent where it exists and completely absent where it doesn't. Some cities have deployed it at scale; most haven't at all. Check your city's transportation or sustainability department for a current map and planned rollout, because any list published today will be wrong soon.

If your street has none, ask. Municipal deployments are frequently driven by resident requests, and a neighborhood petition carries weight an individual email doesn't.

Now the cable question, because everyone asks. Running a cable from a window across a public sidewalk is a trip hazard, prohibited in many places, and puts you squarely in the frame if someone falls. Some jurisdictions have formal schemes permitting it with an approved cable channel and a registration process; others explicitly forbid it. Ask your local authority rather than assuming, and if the answer is no, take it seriously — this is the one option on the page with a real chance of hurting someone.

Stack two options, never one

The drivers who make this look easy almost never rely on a single solution. They have a primary and a backup, and the combination is what removes the stress.

Is it genuinely realistic to own an EV with no home charging at all?

Yes, for moderate-mileage drivers with at least one dependable option — workplace, a nearby public Level 2, or a fast charger they don't mind visiting weekly. It gets unrealistic when you drive long distances daily with no charging at either end. That's where a plug-in hybrid genuinely is the smarter buy.

Should I buy a bigger battery to compensate?

Usually yes — one of the few places where the expensive option is straightforwardly correct. A larger pack means fewer charging events for the same driving, which matters much more when each one requires planning, and it gives you slack when a charger you counted on is dead.

Does this work in cold climates?

Yes, with one adjustment: with no plugged-in car to precondition from grid power, you'll spend range warming the cabin and pack on cold mornings. Park sheltered if you can, and lean on seat heaters.
