How to Choose an Electric Scooter for Commuting (Without Overbuying)

A guy on my street bought a 62-pound dual-motor scooter with a 40-mile claimed range. His commute is 2.4 flat miles to a train station, and the last twenty feet involve a flight of stairs into a bike room. He rode it for six weeks, hurt his back lifting it, and now it lives under a tarp on his porch.
That's the real failure mode. Not "not enough power," not "not enough range." People buy the scooter they'd want for a Saturday, then have to live with it on a wet Tuesday when they're four minutes late.
So work backwards from the trip.
Audit the route before the spec sheet
Walk or drive your commute once with a notes app open. You're looking for five things, and none of them appear on a product page. Distance door to door, which is often shorter than the driving distance because you'll cut through a park. Elevation, which your phone's map app will draw for you as a profile. Surface quality, measured in flinches: expansion joints, sunken utility covers, tram tracks, gravel shoulders, that one block of chip seal. Curbs and stairs, counted individually. And storage at both ends.
That last one decides more than anything else on the list, and it's the one people skip. Where does the scooter physically sit for eight hours?

Weight is the spec people regret
Nobody returns a scooter for being too light. They return it for being too heavy — or worse, they don't return it, they just quietly stop riding it, and it sits in the hallway reminding them of the money.
Weight is cruel because of when you feel it. The comfort a heavy scooter buys you arrives during twelve pleasant minutes of riding. The cost arrives in ten-second bursts at the bottom of a staircase, fully dressed for work, already stressed.
The suitcase test
Before you buy, find something in your home that weighs what the scooter weighs — a packed suitcase, a bag of concrete mix, a full water-cooler jug — and carry it up a flight of stairs twice. That's your morning. If it felt fine, add a few pounds, because published weights tend to describe the lightest configuration and rarely include the accessories you'll bolt on.
Fold quality, not fold speed
Marketing loves "folds in three seconds." Ignore it. What matters is whether the folded scooter has a natural grab point that isn't the throttle or the brake lever, whether the stem latch closes positively instead of relying on a hook-and-loop strap, whether the handlebars fold in or still occupy a doorway's worth of width, and whether the thing stands up on its own or needs a wall. An eight-second fold that produces a compact carryable shape beats a three-second fold that leaves you hugging a metal starfish.

Here's the part that trips people up: the heavier scooter is usually the better machine. Bigger wheels, real suspension, stronger brakes, a stem that doesn't flex under hard braking. If your scooter never leaves the ground floor, buy the heavy one without guilt. If you carry it, don't — ride quality is worth nothing on a commute you've abandoned.
Buy roughly double the range you need
Advertised range comes from a best-case run: a light rider, a low constant speed, flat ground, mild weather, no stops. That's a legitimate test. It just isn't your commute.
A workable planning rule is to assume half to two-thirds of the claimed number once your weight, your real cruising speed, hills, and stop-and-go get involved. Check that against a full round trip, not one way, unless you're certain about charging at the far end. Then subtract again for winter, because cold cells have higher internal resistance, sag harder under throttle, and can trip an early low-voltage cutoff. Most of that capacity comes back when it warms up. You just don't get it back in January.
Shop in watt-hours, not miles. Watt-hours (volts × amp-hours) is a physical quantity; a 36 V, 10 Ah pack is 360 Wh. Miles is a claim. Commuter scooters at moderate speed tend to land somewhere in the 15–25 Wh per mile band depending on rider weight and terrain, so that pack plausibly covers 14 to 24 real miles — and the bottom of that range is the number you should plan around.
Counterintuitively, a huge pack can be worse for you. Lithium cells age from time spent sitting at high state of charge, not just from cycles. If your commute needs 200 Wh and you buy 1,000 Wh so you "never have to think about charging," you'll leave it at 100% for months and lose capacity to calendar aging. A modest pack cycled between roughly 30% and 80% often outlives a giant one parked full.
Brakes beat top speed
Rank braking above everything except weight.
Mechanical and hydraulic disc brakes give the most consistent stopping power and are the easiest to adjust and re-pad. Drum brakes are sealed, nearly maintenance-free, and genuinely shine in rain and road salt, trading a little weight and lever feel for that. The stomp-on-the-fender foot brake is a backup, not a brake. And regenerative braking on its own is not enough for a scooter you ride in traffic — that puts your stopping distance in the hands of a controller and, on front-motor scooters, one wheel.
What you want is two independent systems, at least one purely mechanical, ideally one per wheel. Then a snapped cable, a soaked rotor, or a firmware hiccup doesn't leave you coasting toward a red light.
Check one more thing that riders discover too late: whether pads and cables for that exact brake are actually purchasable. A lot of cheap scooters use hardware nobody stocks, which turns a $12 wear item into a dead vehicle.
Overrated
Top speed above about 20 mph. On small wheels in city traffic you're buying crash energy and range loss for a minute of commute time.
Dual motors, for commuting. Extra weight, faster battery drain, and hill-climbing most routes don't demand. If you have one genuinely brutal grade, sure. Otherwise it's a Saturday feature you'll pay for daily.
App connectivity. Useful for firmware and a soft lock. Not a tiebreaker, and it's a liability if the brand vanishes and the app rots.
Seats. A seat on a scooter with almost no suspension travel means your spine absorbs what your knees used to.
Underrated instead: fenders that actually stop the spray, a rear light bright enough to matter at dusk, a stem with no flex, and tires you can buy from a local shop.
Big tires or real suspension, not neither
On a 10-inch wheel, air volume is suspension. A large pneumatic tire smooths out the high-frequency buzz that springs can't catch, and it keeps small potholes from becoming ejection events. If a scooter has neither decent-sized air tires nor suspension, your route had better be freshly paved. If your route is smooth, suspension is just weight and pivots to maintain, and you can skip it happily.
Where does it charge?
Find the outlet before you buy the scooter. Some offices are relaxed about a scooter under a desk; some have a blanket lithium-battery policy and mean it. If you can't charge at work, your round trip has to fit inside one charge with headroom, every day, including the cold ones. Also check the charger itself — a fast charger that weighs three pounds is not going in your bag, and a slow one that needs eight hours changes your evening routine. Charge on a hard non-flammable surface, unplug when it's full rather than leaving it on the charger for days, and let a cold pack come up to room temperature before you plug it in.
Four questions that end the shopping
- Do I carry this up stairs? If yes, hard weight ceiling first, everything else second.
- Does a round trip fit in half the claimed range? If no, next scooter.
- Are there two mechanical brakes, and can I buy pads for them?
- Can I get a tire, a tube, and a charger for this model in twelve months?
If two scooters both pass all four, buy the lighter one. That's the tiebreaker that holds up after six months, because the scooter you'll actually keep riding is the one that never makes you dread the last twenty feet.
