Slow down. That's most of the article.

Every list of range tips buries the one that works under nine that barely matter. So here it is first: your right foot's average position on the highway determines more of your range than everything else on this page combined.

Not acceleration. Cruising speed.

Hard acceleration feels wasteful and mostly isn't — in an electric car you get a chunk of it back when you slow down. What you never get back is the energy spent pushing air aside. Drag force rises with the square of speed and the power to overcome it with the cube. That's physics, not a manufacturer claim, and it's why an EV that beats its rated range around town falls apart at 80 mph.

This table isolates the aero component only, indexed to 100 at 60 mph. Real cars also fight rolling resistance and run accessories, so total consumption won't scale this steeply — but the trend is the trend:

Look at the jump from 70 to 80. Dramatically more work for a few minutes on a two-hour drive — minutes you hand straight back at the charger. Dropping five miles per hour is frequently faster door to door once charging stops are counted, which is the part people refuse to believe until they try it.

The practical version: set cruise control a notch below the flow of traffic in the right lane and stop fighting it. Also, draft nobody. Tucking in behind a truck genuinely reduces drag and it is not worth the risk, so let's not pretend otherwise.

The roof rack you forgot was up there

An empty crossbar set left on the roof year-round is one of the most expensive things you can do to an EV, and almost nobody removes them.

Electric cars have flush handles, smooth underbodies and obsessively detailed mirrors because designers fought for every fraction of a drag coefficient. Bolting bars across the roof undoes a meaningful chunk of that. Add a box and it's worse. Add bikes and, as far as the air is concerned, you're in a different vehicle class.

Use the rack four weekends a year? Take it off for the other forty-eight. Twenty minutes of work for months of better efficiency. And a hitch-mounted carrier sitting in the wake behind the car is far cheaper aerodynamically than the same load on the roof.

Heat the person, not the cabin

Cold weather takes range in two ways that get conflated. The battery itself is less willing to give up energy when it's cold, which you can't do much about directly. And the cabin needs heating, which in a car with no waste engine heat has to come out of the pack.

Cabin heating is the part you control. Resistive heating is an electric space heater running off your traction battery — the largest accessory draw in most EVs. A heat pump does the same job for far less energy in moderate cold, which makes it one of the few option-box items genuinely worth paying for if your winters are real.

Either way the move is the same: use the seat heaters and heated wheel aggressively, keep the blower modest. Heating a body by contact costs a fraction of heating several cubic meters of air. Most drivers do the opposite — blast the cabin, ignore the seat — because that's the habit gasoline cars taught them.

Air conditioning in summer costs far less than heating in winter. Don't sweat it, literally.

Tires: boring, cheap, genuinely significant

Two things here, and the second one surprises people.

First, check your pressures monthly. Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance continuously, at every speed, and tires lose pressure quietly over months. Inflate to the placard figure on the door jamb, measured cold. This is free.

Second, and more consequential: what you fit at replacement time. Factory EV tires are usually low-rolling-resistance compounds chosen to protect the range figure. Swap in grippy performance rubber and you lose real range permanently, as a step change the week they go on — exactly when nobody suspects the tires. Bigger wheels do the same thing.

If range matters to you, tell the tire shop that before they recommend anything. If handling matters more, that's a legitimate trade — just make it knowingly instead of discovering it.

Spend the wall's energy, not the battery's

Plugged in and leaving at a known time? Schedule the departure in the car's settings. It warms the cabin and conditions the pack on grid power instead of draining what you're about to drive on. On a bitter morning that's the difference between starting warm and spending the first fifteen miles heating everything from your own reserve.

Same trick mid-trip: set a fast charger as your navigation destination and most cars precondition the pack so it arrives ready to accept high power. That's a charging-speed benefit rather than a range one, but it removes the reason people speed in the first place — anxiety about the next stop.

Overrated range hacks

  • Eco mode. It dulls throttle response and softens the climate control. It doesn't change physics. If it stops you speeding, fine — but you're doing the work, not the setting.
  • Obsessive one-pedal technique. Regeneration is good but lossy, and the gap between a skilled hypermiler and a normal attentive driver is small next to a 10 mph speed difference. Drive smoothly and stop grading yourself.
  • Killing the AC. Real savings, miserable experience, tiny effect next to speed.
  • Emptying the trunk. Weight matters on hills and in traffic. Thirty pounds of junk is not a range strategy. The roof box is.

The rule to remember

If you're ever short on range and need to fix it right now, do these in order: drop your speed by 10 mph, turn the cabin heat down and the seat heater up, and check whether there's anything on the roof. That sequence recovers more than any amount of clever driving technique, and you can start on all three inside a minute.

And if the gap between your rated range and your real range bothers you constantly, the honest fix isn't technique. It's buying a car with a heat pump, a slippery body, and sensible wheels next time.
